Happy Bank Holiday weekend everybody! How have you been spending yours?
For me, I took a day trip to the Lake District with my sister yesterday; specifically Windermere and Ambleside. It was a last minute decision to make the most of the nice weather (which was a good shout as today has been torrential rain!) and just get lost in The Lakes for a little while.
We’re really lucky that we don’t live too far away, only about an hour and a half drive. We got there for 10am and although it was a bit cloudy, the sun had its hat on 😎🌤
Windermere was the first stop, where we had a little mooch around the shops. They have lots of lovely little places selling souvenirs and trinkets, as well as the likes of Joules and L’Occitane if you fancy treating yourself.
Then we popped into Monties for a cuppa and a teacake. Monties is a B&B with a lovely café too. The only downside was a couple of wasps that seemed to take a shine to us and we couldn’t shake them off!
Our next stop was to walk right down to the lake itself, which is just so stunning. I think sometimes we don’t tend to appreciate just how beautiful our own country is! It was really busy down there, with lots of families feeding the ducks, geese and swans.
We then decided to hop on a boat, taking in the Red Cruise from Windermere Lake Cruises. This was £11.30 per adult and takes you from Bowness-on-Windermere up to Ambleside. You have two options with this:
1) You can either stay on the boat, sail to Ambleside and back again, which takes roughly 70-75 minutes or
2) Sail to Ambleside, get off there for a wander around, then jump on a later boat back to Windermere. This was the option we chose.
The views from sailing across Lake Windermere were just amazing:
Ambleside is a lovely, picturesque village just like Windermere. Here, we did much the same in that we just meandered around taking in the sights.
We stopped off at Bar Es, which is an amazing little place that does Mexican Tapas and craft beers. This is where I suck as a blogger as I failed to take a single photo of our food 🙈🙈 But trust me when I say that it was so delicious! My sister and I ordered the veggie paella, garlic bread with goats cheese, olives and sundried tomato, padron peppers, deep fried squid, patatas bravas and coleslaw. This cost us just under £30 with two soft drinks. No craft beers when you’re driving, unfortunately!
Before we knew it, we were back at Ambleside pier to sail back to Windermere:
We stopped at a sweet shop on the way back to the car to pick up some fudge for the folks, aren’t we kind?! Then it was time to come home. It was a really lovely way to while away some hours and get some fresh air, we will definitely be back.
What are your favourite areas of The Lake District?
This looks so picturesque! And for around £10, I’d definitely go on those boats! I love a boat ride!

Thank you for sharing this lovely stroll! Your pics are excellent. I’d have loved to spend the day just poking around in shops and feeding the geese. If that is allowed 🙂 Being lakeside is my favorite spot.

I’ve only been to the Lakes twice I think. And it was Windermere both times. It looks like you got amazing weather for it too. I hate boats so I’d have to skip that bit but it sounds like such a bargain for that price. It sounds like a lovely trip x
