The One Where The Fresh Prince Came To Blackpool…

OK, so said event actually occurred a month ago and I am sliiiiightly late in writing this – but I’m here now! Excuses, excuses, but I genuinely did have a rather hectic month. I’m never normally such a social butterfly, I’m a boring cow usually but you know when all of your plans for the year appear to fall continuously into one big chunk? Yeah, that.

So it was 27th August and me and my friend Anna travelled to the Vegas of the north west of England… The one and only Blackpool! First shock of the trip was that it was actually SUNNY. And on a Bank Holiday weekend too, no less.  One of the very rare occasions this year that I had a chance to crack out my new shades and I wasn’t wasting that, my friends.

We arrived at our cute little hotel, which had a glorious sea view and then pretty much headed straight back out. Food was a-calling (not an unusual thing for me) so off we went to line our stomachs for what was set to be a bloody brilliant day/night.

^^^ Cute sea view!

Now this is where I have to add that both myself and Anna were pretty much in a state of disbelief at this precise point. It’d been a good few weeks since we’d bought our tickets for the Livewire Festival, taking place on Blackpool Prom that very evening. The reason for our disbelief? Well, you know, it was being headlined by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. As in, WILL SMITH. Or as me and Anna kept referring to him, “Will ACTUAL Smith.”

We bought the tickets because how could we not? But neither of us actually believed that Will (actual) Smith would be there. I mean, it’s Hollywood star Will Smith. In Blackpool. Would you believe it? We kept wondering if maybe it was going to be some kind of tribute act but surely those in charge of the festival would never get away with such misleading advertising? It had to be the real thing surely? But how on earth did they manage such a signing? We joked that maybe they’d totally blown the budget and that there’d be no illuminations this year, or that they’d had to dismantle the Blackpool Tower and sell if off for scrap in order to afford Mr Smith.

^^^ Surely this can’t be dismantled?! 😲

I digress! We ate and we drank then as we headed to a cash machine outside, we heard it. Out of nowhere… “BOOM! SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE THE ROOM!” They were here! Soundcheck had begun and that was the moment that I began to think this may actually be the real deal.

Fastforward to us being at the gig, which had some really decent, throwback support in the shape of Phats n Small and Fatman Scoop – as if! The weather remained lovely and my “just in case” jacket stayed tied firmly around my waist – what a win!

^^^ A complete victory for the Great British Summertime!

Then it was time for the main event. After a big build up and some pretty impressive pyrotechnics, there they were. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. Will (actual) Smith was live on stage. In Blackpool. Mind = blown.  I finally believed it!

They were on for a good 90 minutes I’d say and sang everything you could have hoped for – Boom Shake The Room, Men in Black, Miami, Gettin’ Jiggy With It, Just The Two of Us, Switch, Summertime, even a brand new song called Lit.

^^^ Will ACTUAL Smith. In the flesh.

And of course, the theme from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air which I would pretty much bet my life on that EVERYONE knows the lyrics to? It was bloody amazing, the crowd were buzzing, the Tower was all lit up and looking fabulous and to top it all off, there was a huge fireworks display at the end of it all. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince had absolutely smashed the Livewire Festival and I think it’s certainly something that Blackpool won’t forget in a hurry. It’s also something I’ll be dining out on for a long, long time… “Remember that time I saw Will (actual) Smith in real life?!”

^^^ These last two are clearly not my photos – credit to the owners! But how amazing?

The night was rounded off with a trip to Popworld (if you’ve never been, please go) and copious amounts of gin in the form of Gintendo 64 cocktails. Absolute genius name!

I think it’s safe to say that a good time was had by all 😊
